Energy Saving Tips in the Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the areas in the house which uses the most energy.

Here is some energy saving tips in the kitchen to consider;

Fridge/Freezer

  • Regulate temperature settings to maintain the temperature in your fridge around 4°C, and the freezer, close to -18°C.
  • Monitor door seals. Ensure you replace any loose or broken seals. A good test if seals are working effectively is to place a piece of paper between the door and the seal, then pull on the paper. If it moves easily, a replacement seal will be needed.
  • When placing food in your fridge, position slightly apart to allow good air circulation.
  • Fridges and freezers work most efficiency when full, so select one that’s the right size for your requirements.
  • Allow a few centimetres gap around your fridge so air can circulate freely.

Oven and Cook Top

  • Defrost foods prior to cooking to save cooking time.
  • Minimise opening the oven door while food is cooked.
  • Keep lids on pots and pans while cooking. This will improve cooking efficiency.
  • Position saucepans and pots to cover hotplates completely.

Dishwasher

  • Use cold water for your dishwasher.
  • Use economy cycle and operate only when the dishwasher is full.
  • Ensure nothing is stopping the wash arms from rotating correctly before running the dishwasher.
  • Consider to air dry dishes instead of using drying cycle.

Microwave oven

  • Defrost food in the fridge prior to decrease cooking time.

Other appliances

  • Using toasters, electric kettles, sandwich press and coffee machines and will typically offer better value than using the stove, oven or grill.
